How many handicapped-accessible parking spaces does my Florida building need?
The U.S. Department of Justice last updated its regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 2010. The ADA requires all government, public, and commercial facilities to have handicapped-accessible parking. How many spaces should your building have?
The minimum number of handicapped-accessible parking spaces required depends on the total number of parking spaces. One out of every 6 accessible parking spaces must be van accessible. Also, keep your handicapped-accessible parking as close as possible to the building entrance.

Keep in mind that medical outpatient facilities need 10% of their spaces to be handicapped accessible. Rehab facilities specializing in mobility conditions and physical therapy facilities need 20% of spaces to be accessible. And remember, 1 out of every 6 accessible parking spots must be van accessible.
Parking spaces specifically for buses and trucks don’t have to be accessible spaces. However, any public transportation loading zone must leave room for wheelchairs.
You must clearly label all handicapped-accessible parking spots with the International Symbol of Accessibility and keep those spots in good condition.
When constructing a new building, be sure to follow ADA regulations to keep your facility accessible to everyone.
